Another Deserted Medieval Village?

As part of the Tees Rediscovered project, the recent geophysical survey at Low Worsall was followed by the 'Big Dig' from April 13th-17th.

The major excavations were on the Green but some residents also allowed test pits in their own gardens.

Over 20 volunteers led by Tees archaeologist Robin Daniels, braved the rain and mud during five days of intensive activity retreating for breaks to ' base camp 'to enjoy Kay's hospitality. Their efforts were well rewarded. Small finds included a Roman silver coin and medieval pottery but it was the discovery of a grave marker in medieval house foundations which caused most excitement. There are already strong indications of the layout of an early village but the evidence will now be assessed. Will there be clues as to the period of occupation? We await the findings.
